DEVONPORT SHIELD. WESLEY'S BIG SURPRISE. STANLEY'S EFFORT AGAINST MOUNT EDEN, The first matches for the Devonport £hieM were played at Remuera under S&* «i;efjue* of the Aucklamd Hockey Association on Saturday afternoon. The grounds were in good order, but the play did not reach the high standard, being more of a strenuoii3 nature. Wesley excelled themselves, and brought off a big surprise by drawing with Somerville, 3 goals apiece. St. Luke's ran up the highest tally, defeating Colts by 5 goals to 1. University and Areta had a hard tussle, the students emerging victors by a solitary goal. Mount Eden just accounted for Stanley by 3 goafe to 2. A CLOSE STRUGGLE. THE STUDENTS' OPEX POLICY PROVES SUCCESSFUL. Play hung; nt midfield until Leonard Bhifted the leather into Areta's territory, and a little later Hamilton hit the posts •with a running shot. Forward work on the part of Hayson, Carter, and Anthony put University on the defensive. Leonard and Kndcliffo cleared, and Seelen, receiving the ball from Radcliffe, had a shot, which wai well stopped by wlHric. Areta advanced along the right, but v free hit sent them back, and during an attack hi the ein-le, Areta were penalised, and a corner resulted. Twice Potter held up the students' van. and piny hovered at inidneld. where Cartelgained possession and almost got through. A lively attack by Areta. which contained excellent stick work, was interrupted by Badcliffe, and a crosshit by Spencer, and a return, gave Hamilton an awkward opportunity. Ellison one of Areta's fullbacks, was compelled 'to retire owing to a knock below the eye. The blacks were penned in for some time. A free hit brought relief, and the spell finished with play at inldfield. When the game restarted Areta were first away, and invaded the circle, nnd went very close to scoring. A counter offensive by the students saw play reach the other end. The Areta backs cleared, and a pass from Hayson to Anthony enabled the latter to shoot, without result. A loose Bortie by University was well stopped by Wilkie, but the students were not to be denied, and Spencer, centring nicely Hamilton took the ball into the circle, and Hay found the net. Maintaining the pressure, University went within an ace of scoring again. However, Areta had a turn on the attack, Carter and Hayson breaking through at a great pace. Ormsby joined in, and cross-hitting, Anthony had a shot, which produced a corner. Areta made great attempts to equalise the score, and from a centre Carter had a gentle'shot, which was just snatched out uf the goal, and a penalty bully in the mouth of the goal went in favour of Dobson. It was a rosy chance for Areta. University got away, and taking play to the other end, cornered the students, but no further score resulted. University • 1 1 Areta O Mr. L. H. Norton refereed. ST.
