FLOOD CONTROL SCHEME.
i MANAWATU-ORUA COMMISSION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. The commission set up in connection with the Manawatu-Orua River Board' 3 £450,000 flood control scheme commenced its deliberations this morning, the chairman (Mr. Watson). P.M.. of Feilding. presiding. The two other members of the commission are Mr. Koch (civil engineer, of Auckland) and Mr. H. Leighton (land agent, of Wellington. Briefly, the duties of the commission are to decide the following points: (1) As to whet ler the 13 local Vortips cited, or any of them, should contribute any sum at all to the scheme put forward o> | the Manawatu-Orua River Board for protection from flooding, and, if so. what is a fair proportion? (2) Whether the Makerua Drainage Board is entitled to any, and, if so. what allowance for the very considerable expenditure it has been put to in guarding its area against flooding; (3) Whether the State ehoul.i find any amount by way of subsidy to assist in the execution of the scheme It is expected that the sitting will extend over several days. Th" will also inspect the area concerned.
