WORLD-WIDE VOGUE OF BEAUTY CONTESTS.
Beautiful womanhood i» being glorified to-day by beauty contests, which are in vogue all the world over. They have resulted in many unknown beauties being brought into the limelight of fame, and have paved the way for numerous careen on the stage and screen. The.American motion picture world holds the largest number of example* of what the Beauty Contest has done towards supplying the screen with talent and beauty which lay hidden until brought to light by Beauty Contests. Many of the most famous stars of to-day owe their first step up the ladder of fame to such competitions. They have become recognised institutions in England and' America, the latter holding, each year, that glorious pageant in Atlantic City, the winner of last year's event being included in the pictures above. The illustrations show: (1) "Miss Australia" (Beryl Mills). This competition, recently concluded, was the most successful of its kind ever held in the Commonwealth. "Miss Australia" became one of the chief topics of conversation, and the amazing interest was sustained until the end. Miss Mills is now in Atlantic City, pitting her charms against those of the American beauties. (2) Eve Gray, who won the first Sydney contest. Immediately her success was made known, Miss Gray was engaged, by Hugh J. Ward. She appeared on the Australian stage, and is now making a great success in London. (3) " Miss America" (Fay Lamphier), whose beautiful figure has earned her the added title of "The American Venus." Miss Lamphier became a screen actress from the moment she won the contest, and is now starring. (4) Monica Mack, who was second in the "Miss Australia'» competition. Miss Mack was also engaged by Hugh J. Ward, and isappearing with " Mercenary Mary " - - in Sydney. (5) Betty Montgomery,, who won the second Australian contest. She is a popular dancer in Melbourne.
