FATALITY AT GREATFORD.
TRAIN WRECKS CAR. WOMAN FATALLY INJURED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) MARTON, this day. A distressing level crossing accident, resulting in a woman being killed and three other persone more or less serously injured, occurred at the Greatford station, four miles from Marton, at 6.30 last evening, when the Wanganui-Pal-merston North mixed train ran into a five-seater car driven by Mr. Leonard I Weston. a well-known Mangaweka resident. Mr. Weston was accompanied by his daughter Beattie, aged 7, hie sister-in-law, Mrs. Jurgens, of Taihape, and Bertie Jurgens, aged 7. The party were returning from Pahnerston North after having conveyed Mrs. Weston to a hospital there. It is stated that, on approaching the crossing, Mr. Weston kept a good lookout, especially towards the station, but when he reached the rails he found that the train was almost upon them. He made frantic efforts to get the car off the track, but was. too late to avoid a crash, which threw the car and its occupants on to the roadway, the car being borne along to the cattle stop, where it was deposited —a mass of wreckage. It was then found that Mrs. Jurgens and her son Bertie were seriously hurt. They were taken to hospital, where Mrs. Jurgens died at 11 p.m. The others suffered from injuries and shock.
