Eggs cannot be cooked or tea made in an open vessel at the top of a high mountain because the pressure of the atmosphere diminishes, and the boiling point is consequently lowered. Although the water boils, the heat is not sufficient for cooking purposes. rhe Kohinoor is a large diamond known as the "Mountain of Light." it belonged former'v to the Great Mogul. It was obtained from the mines of Golconda in 1550. It now weighs about 102 carats, and i s valued at £2,000,000. When water i n the ground freezes, it expands and so breaks up the soil. This broken soil becomes m ud on t ] le thaw setting in. A watch can be used as a compass if we hold it horizontally, so that 12 o'clock points to the sun. The position halfway between that point and the hour hand is due north. The striped polo outside a barber's shop is the relic of the times when barbers were surgeons. The pole was given to the patient to grip during an operation. The stripes represent the bandages employed.
