BIRKENHEAD BAND.

Tie complimentary concert tendered by the (Birkenhead Borough Band in the Foresters' Hall la«t evening wae largely attended, and greatly appreciated. In addition to the various selections played by the 'band, the programme wae augmented by other enjoyable iteme. These included violin, solos by Mies Gwen Martin, songs by Miss Muriel Fineli, Mr. Thos. Hum and 'Master Dave Lunny, and humorous anecdotes 'by Mr. Percy Rose. The accompanists were Mr*. Frank Finch and Mr. E. Lanigan.

The Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeat«s, remarked upon the appreciation evinced by the audience of the band's playing. The musical standard attained under the conductorship of Mr. Greg. Smitj would doubtless be demonstrated at tlie next bands' contest, in which the local band would compete. A fund was being created for the purchase of new uniforms, on account of those now in uee ehowing signs of wear. Particularly good work had been done 5n connection wnn the new set of silver inetrumente which the band used that evening. These had cost £750, and £550 had been paid off, leaving but £200 to be raised to liquidate the debt. The construction of a bandstand in the Civic Reserve was almost finished. The work of building this had been done by the bandsmen by voluntary labour, the materials having been supplied toy tihe borough council. The contract for the war memorial had been let. By Christmas, or before, thie piece of ground would be improved to an extent that Birkenhead could be proud of.
