VETERAN TRAINER INJURED.
•ACCIDENT TO MR. R. THORPE.
While crossing some steps which lead from the path at the back of the birdcage into the birdcage at Ellerslie on Saturday, Mr. Robert Thorpe, who is probably the oldest gentleman connected with horse racing in New Zealand, slipped and received injuries to his head', and had to be taken to his home. Mr Thorpe was apprenticed to the Marquis of Exeter in 1846, and in his early days looked after the famous Stockwell, who played a most important part in the history of the turf. Mr. Thorpe came to New Zealand in 1564, and trained and rode a number of good horses. Mr. Thorpe i 9 the father of Mr. J. Thorpe, who trains Lomint and Chamour, both of whom won on Saturday at the Pakuranga meeting.
