GRAIN AND PRODUCE.
CANTERBURY MARKETS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCfI, Friday. The value of potatoes has touched practically the lowest point or the year. Coastal business has been done at £5 r.o.b. Tor this month. The depressing lnnuence is the quantity or tubers in stock at ports, which is preventing Northern operators from coming on the market. Just sufficient shipments have been going north to meet the demand, and with the knowledge of the accumulations at northern ports there Is no incentive for the ordinary order business. It is reported that a fair quantity Is being rebaggert for the next Sydney boat on August 26, and that, so far, a few rresh arrivals from the country are taking their place. The only nrm element in the present- position is the grower, who Is not a seller at the nominal value of £3 15/ a ton on trucks. The interesting possibility is that, with so many paper potatoes being thrown on the market, actual stuff to cover may be securely held by the grower. The next Auckland boat is due to sail at the beginning or the week. The Sydney boat, Waikouaitt. on August 26. is expected to take a smaller consignment than the Walhora. To date Just on 150.000 sacks have been shipped to Sydney. The firmer tone in the oat market Is maintained, and 4/3 and 4/ f.oJD., 5.1., for A and B Gartons respectively is available. An. odd parcel or two of wheat has been picked up at 8/ on trucks. Chaff is slow of sale at £5 10/ on trucks, to £5 15/ Tor the best bright quality. The good feed season ts restricting the inquiry. Seeds are not showing any improvement in demand.
