INTERPRETER'S FEES.

CHINESE AT VARIANCE. . JUDGMENT FOR DEFENDANT. While his father, Hong Yick, was ill ■ over a period of four mouths, Fong Lin , (Mr. Dickson) engaged Shack Home (Mr. Cahill) to act as interpreter, but when it came to tho matter of payment the trouble commenced. The claim for £32 due as fees was brought by Shack Home before Mr. W. ; R. McKeaVi, S.M. The plaintiff said he was employed by Fong Lin as interpreter, and produced letters written in Chinese by the defendant. The letter gave an English translation of the letters, but the magistrate was not satisfied, and adjourned, the case pending a translation by an independent interpreter. Delivering judgment this morning, Mr. McKean referred to the fact that one important passage relied on by the plaintiff did not appear in the independent translation. There was also a discrepancy in the dates. The amount claimed was excessive, and four years had been allowed to elapse. In the circumstances judgment would be given iv favour of the defendant.
