INTERPRETATION CLAUSES. DECISION'S BY ARBITRATION COURT. At a sitting of the Arbitrati-'n Court this morning several applications wore made for interpretations of clauses HI awards. . Mr Slaughter applied on behalf ot ti.e Labour Department, at the request ot Diver and Gurdine. for interpretation o£ a in the wiekerworkers' award, relating to the making of ladies shopping basket*. Under the Auckland award women and boys wens _ not allowed to weave certain parts of the baskets concerned. His Honor said that under the Wellington award ladies' shopping baskets were exempted, but the Am-kland award was made because of an agreement between the parties concerned. One point to be determined by the Curt was whether '"picking in.' , referred to in the award, was weaving. Mr. Dixon. on behalf of the tniou, said that boys and women in the trade were allowed to do only certain work. Mr. W. Scott: D«> >"»» wi *» ,o prohibit the light work being done by women? Witness: Yes. His Honor said that the award provided that the baskets should be made by journeymen and apprentices. w:th the exclusion of women and other boys. Singeing and picking were excluded from the work done under the definition of •■journeyman."' and could be done by women and boys other than apprentices. The only way to get over the point was for both parties to unanimously agree, and get the award amended." But as the award stood, there was no doubt the females and boys other than apprentices could not be employed at the work referred to. Stewards' Award. An interpretation of clauses in the stewards' award relating to the hours i and overtime of stewards when a-t»ng as night-watchmen was sought by the Inspector of Awards (Mr. Grieve). Mr. Kennedy appeared on behalf ot the union. The Court reserved its decision. Enginedriver-Watchmen. In connection with enginedriverwatchmen, employed in the timber trade, it was announced that the interested parties, as the result of • conference, were agreeable to the insertion of a clause in the timber* workers' award covering enginedriverwatchmen. The Court asreed recommendation.
