POULTRY SHOW.

OVER 800 EXHIBITS.

LARGEST THIS YF.AR.

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Championship birds from tie various North Island shows met to-day at the poultry show of the Auckland Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Club, which was opened at the Drill Hall, Rutland Street. There were over 800 exhibits in all classes, representing Wellington, New Plymouth, Gisborne, Hastings, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Pukekohe, Whangarei, and other places, as well as Auckland. The show, which will be officially opened at 7.30 to-night by the patron of the club (Mr. G. R. Hutchinson), is the largest that has been held in the North Island this year. Two specialist clubs the New Zealand Waterfall Club and the Rhode Island Red Clvb —are holding their annual club shows in conjunction with the event. A great array of trophies is open for competition, and the following championships of the North Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association will be decided: Black Rosecomb bantams, Magpie pigeons, Tumbler pigeons, Dragoon pigeons, and African Owl. Revival of Poultry Show. To-day's show is of special interest, as it indicates a revival of activities on the part of the Auckland Poultry Club. So far as this club is concerned, interest in poultry rather lapsed for over ten years, and Auckland tended to lag behind the rest of the Dominion. It was only through the activities of other clubs, notably the Onehunga Club, assisted by the various specialist clubs, that interest in exhibition poultry and pigeons was kept alive in the province. Satisfaction was expressed at the poultry show to-day in the quality and breeding of Auckland poultry, which, it was considered, compared favourably with that of other centres. If the show had been held earlier in the week it was confidently stated that over 1000 entries would have been received.

The last eighteen months have marked an important advancement in Auckland poultry circles. Early in 1925 a few enthusiastic fanciers formed a bantam and fancy pigeon club, and held their first show last winter. At the annual meeting three months ago this club formed itself into the Auckland Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Club. Old fanciers and also a number of leading business men in Auckland supported the movement, with the result that the larger club has now a membership of over a hundred. It is intended to hold annual shows in the city, and before very long it is expected that the Auckland club will rank as the first in New Zealand. The officials to-day were: Mr. G. H. Ambler (president),' Mr. E. J. R. McLaren (secretary), judges, Mr. W. Wilson (modern game and variety bantams), Mr. J. R. Boswell (old English game and O.E.G. bantams), Mr. W. A. Hanson (light breeds, fancy and utility ducks), Mr. Ambler (Rhode Island Reds), Mr. A. Palmer (other heavy breeds), Messrs. B. Fullerton, C. Collings, V. Ryder, and G. Bedford (pigeons), and Messrs. Hanson and Yercoe (canaries). The show will be continued until tomorrow night. The awards were:— Old English Game. Fancy Poultry.— Black red cock : E. Bust 1. J. Nescus 2. Black red cockerel : E.
