WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
With a view of providing work for th» local unemployed, the Otahuhn Borough Council authorised its engineer to prepare estimates for completing work on the Sturges Park. The report states that to make thf> playing area suitable for the holding of sports, a certain amount of filling is required, owing to the deepest filling having subsided. The total sum to be spent on the park is £4151 17/6. Two other estimates prepared for improvements to approaches to the park, totalling £947 6/4, were rejected. It was resolved to spend another sum of £300 on forming a footpath from Albert Street to the Seaside Park ia Princes Street. Cγ. Petrie objected to the way in which legislation was thrust upon local bodies in regard to relief work, which should not be done under the cloak of emergency. He considered the work required at Stnre-'s Park would find employment for all the local men out of work. The Mayor stated that local men would be given preference, and to ensure this a committee was formed to consider applications.
