OBITUARY.

MR. C. E. BREWER.

The death has occurred at Martinborough, at the age of 76, of Mr. Charles E. Brewer, a well-known settler of the Wairarapa, and formerly of the Wanganui district. He arrived with his parents in 1554 at Auckland, where his father was subsequently collector of Customs for many years. The ship in which the family arrived was the Merchantman, on which Sir George Grey was also a passenger. After completing his education at the Auckland Grammar School, Mr. Brewer took up land at Waverley, where he spent several years, and then removed to Martin borough. Mr. Brewer was a keen sportsman, and had owned various well-known performers on the turf, one being Folly, a winner of the Taranaki Cup fifty years ago. He is survived by a widow, two sons and three daughters.

CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The death occurred to-day of Air. H. R. Smith, who was for 22 years town clerk of Christchurch. He retired owing to ill-health at the end of 1923.

MR. MICHAEL MARKS

DUNEDIN, this day. Mr. Michael Marke, who has died at Uhristchurch. was an old and very highly respected citizen of Dunedin. Xot long ago he came through a serious illness. As it happened, however, his wife died first, Mrs. Marke expiring on June 17, three weeks ago. After her burial Mr. Marks went to reside with his youngest son, Dr. J. D. Marks, of Christchurch, and there his death hae now occurred. Mr. Marks was an enthusiastic member for a lifetime of the Dunedin Bowling Club, and was a senior member of the Jewish congregation. Another son is Mr. Joe Marks, of Wellington.
