SOCIAL JOTTINGS. Mrs. Seeeombe and Miss Buckland are visiting Christehureh. Mrs. W. J. Hunter and Hiss Hunter, of Hamilton, are visiting Mrs. Bodle in Auckland. Mr. nnd Mrs. L. C. Rathbone, Victoria Avenue, Remuera, have left on a visit to Wellington. ' Mrs. H. Douglas, of Hamilton, is in Auckland to meet Miss Margaret Douglas, who returned from Sydney by the Niagara. Mis? Sutherland, of the New Zealand Forestry Department, left Wellington on Thursday for Rio de Janeiro, where she will visit her sister. Miss Mary King, daughter of Sir Truby and Lady King. aecompunied her to South America. Mrs. Norman Day. of Tauranga. formerly Miss Cora Mclvin, is at present staying with Mrs. H. Melvin, Ilamana Street. Narrow Neck. Mrs. Day is to sing the soprano role of Margue'rita. in the forthcoming production of "Faust,"' to be presented by the Auckland Choral Society. The Victoria League fiub-eoirunittec of the ever-ready commit tee gave an enjoyable concert at the Mind Institute on Tuesday evening. Sweets and cigarettes were distributed by the girls. The performers during the evening were Misses De Renzy, Priestly, Wilson-Smith. St. Clair-Whyte, Hutchison. Jonrdain, Faire. Langsford, Adkins. Uallantyne. and d'Audney Dances were held between the items. Mrs. Gardner, of Rangataua, is visiting her son, Mr. W. Gardner, at Papakura, to be present at his silver wedding. Several groat grand children will also l>e present. Mrs. Gardner is 82 years of age and is still aide to read without the aid of glasses. She is a great knitter, and during the war put up a record for knitting socks for our boys, -when she made a pair a day for over twelve months and received a very encouraging letter of thanks from Lady Liverpool. On Friday, July 2, a joint meeting of the Women's National Reserve and Civic League was held, when the council's grant was discussed, and it was unanimously decided that the council's action in awniting Mr. Brigham's return was in the best interests of the movement. When the Civic Square scheme, iv which a mother's rest room had been promised, was left in abeyance, the Women's National Res/rye sent a deputation to (he Mayor, Mr. Baildou, asking that the council make other plans to establish this much needed civic necessity. Mr. Baildon assured the deputation of his sympathy iv the movement, and promised to put the matter before the council. A grant of £1000 was made. A Melbourne girl. Dr. Marjorie Hughes, travelled to Europe as ship's surgeon on the .Swedish sieamer Yngarcn. and while in the Indian Ocean attended the captain's wife, who gave birth to a son. Miss Daphne Mayo, the younjr Queensland sculptor, has returned to Brisbane. Her bust of Canon Dixon. a well-known headmaster, has caused a great deal of comment. Miss Susan Spencer (Sydney) will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Lowry, of ilawke's Bay, for the hunting season. Miss Sponeer, who is a Queensland girl, is a very fine rider. The return of Miss Susan Lawrence. M.P. for Kast Ham, with the splendid majority of 1627, is the cause of much rejoicing in the Old Country. "The Woman's Leader." in speaking of the viitory, pays: "Lady Astor and Ellen Wilkinson have both testified that her coining was sorely needed, and that the cause of all women, the cause of all children, will benefit by the reappearance in the Parliamentary arena of this eminent educationist; and outside of that arena the cause of all women candidates will benefit, for Susan Lawrence has once more shown that a woman candidate can be relied upon not only to defend, but to attack." It is a sign of the improved status of women in the business world when two such prominent men is Lord Forstcr and Mr. Baldwin are interested in a scheme for providing clubs for musiness women. The idea is to provide a huge central club in London, to cost £200,000, of which various cities, including Melbourne, have already found £72,000.

On Thursday last a wedding ceremony took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. George Jessop, of No. 2 Road, Te Pu , ' . when Thursa Ann, their youngest daughter was married to Samuel Alexander Lang, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Lang. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore white crepe do chine with gathered apron effect. and trimmed with lace and orange blossom. The bouquet tarried by the bride was composed of heather and asparagus fern. Miss Edith Lang acted as bridesmaid, and was dressed in jnauve crope do chine, with pink feather trimming, and a . tulle veil to match, held in place with a wreath of autumn leaves. Mr. William Breslin acted as best man. The wedding took place at St. Mark's Anglican Church on Wednesday last of Madge Winifred, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Blackman. Te Aroha West to William Patterson Godkin, third son of Mr. Thomas Godkin, Thames. The church was decorated by friende of the bride. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore silk crepe georgene, knife-pleated with pearl trimmings, veil and coronet of pearls, and carried a shower bouquet of white narcissus and pale blue irises. Miss S. Ennrett wore a dress of pals apricot and crepe de chine, as bridesmaid, and two little flower girls. Gwendoline Murch and Vida Forster. wore pale mauve crepe de chine and carried a basket of violets. Mr. Malcolm C'onbrough (Tirau), cornsin of the bride, acted ac best man. Miss Cloriue Middclaen. of Morrinsville. was attired in pale gold tissue, with georgette godets. finished with silver and rainbow tulle with a coronet of pink and shaded flowers to match. Both bridesmaids carried i beautiful bouquets of pink ami mauve 1 flowers. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. Trevor MeCallum as best man, and by Mr. Adam Scott as groomsman A reception was afterwards held in the V.M.C.A. rooms, where Mrs. ..Scott received her guests wearing a navy ensemble suit and eyclan'en shaded hat. and carrying a beautiful spray of I autumn-tinted leaves. The happy couple I left by the evening train, the bride travelling in an ensemble suit of mauve repp, with a smart hat to match.
