NEW RECORD.

IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.

CAR ASSEMBLING FACTORY. GLASS WALLS AND ROOF. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. A few montns back the General Motors of New Zealand, Ltd., decided to erect an up-to-date factory at Petone for the assembling of various makes of cars, to be completed in six months. The work was undertaken by a local iirm, Messrs. Trevor Bros. A start was made on May 7, and a new record has been created in rapid building construction in the Dominion .by the progress made. The factory marks the first occasion in the Dominion on which a building has been constructed of imported standardised parts. Tlie materials arrived numbered aud all ready to fit into their alloted places. The class of factory is largely used in America as railway workshops. The walls and roof are constricted of halfinch glass. The lighting is so good that workmen might as well be out in the open. The huge factory, covering 80,500 square feet, is 380 feet by 240 across, and is almost completed. Forty thousand panes of glass were used in this building. The secret of rapid erection lies in the fact that 45 square feet of framework, for glass panes of walls, can be put up at a time. Adjoining this assembling factory is the set-up and warehouse building, covering 45,000 square feet, and measuring 350 by 140. This is a heavier building, as it has to carry a travelling crane. Tiie buildings are separated by a railway line, which brings in parts and takes away finished cars.
