COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS.

WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION. INSURANCE IN N.S.W. ATTITUDE OF COMPANIES. (By Cable.—Tress Association. — Copvris&t-l (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. One of the largest Australian insurance companies operating in New South Wales has decided to cease undertaking insurance under the Workmen's Compensation Act. It is believed the remaining Australian companies will do the same. Nothing definite has yet been decided in regard to companies having their headquarters in the Old Country, but it is known that the subject is having the earnest consideration of the London directors.

The Premier, Mr. J. T. Lang, has stated definitely that there will be no postponement of the operation of the Act, which comes into force on Thursday. He declined to discuss the points raised by Mr. E. Bavin as to the legality of the Government's action, but said that if the State took on the responsibility his Government would not repudiate it.—(A. and N.Z.) •
