LORD SOMERS.

GOVERNOR OF VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, June 28. The Governor-designate of Victoria, Lord Somers, arrived at Melbourne today from England. He was officially welcomed by the Premier, Mr. John Allan, and members of the Cabinet. His Excellency was then sworn in at Parliament House.— (A. and N.Z.)

Arthur Herbert Tennyson Somers Cocke, sixth Baron Somers and sixth baronet, was born in 1887- He is a son of the late Captain H. H. Somers Cocks, of the Coldstream Guards, and at the age of two he ' succeeded his great-uncle to the title. Educated at Mulgrave Castle, the Charterhouse and New. College, Oxford, he entered the Ist Life Guards and .became lieutenantcolonel, but retired from the Army before the war. He returned to it, however, in 1914, and was attached to the Tank Corps, and was awarded the D.5.0., the Military Cross and the Legion of Honour for his services. In : 1922 he left the Army. He has written the history of the 6th (Light) Tank Battalion. Lord Somers was a Lord-in-Waiting to .the King, and one of the Government's spokesmen in the House of Lords. Lord Somers will suit Australians, as he is a great sportsman, a fine horseman and still young enough to take a personal interest in these matters. He is the youngest Governor in the Empire.
