PITT STREET ROBBERY.

THEFT OF RINGS AND WATCHES. FROM MONT DE P-ETE CO. TWO MEN ARRESTED. In connection with the sensational robbery which was perpetrated about 5 o'clock on Wednesday morning last at the Mont de Piete Loan Company's shop in the Gas Company's Buildings, Pitt Street, when the plate glass window was smashed and a large quantity of jewellery stolen, Detectives O'Sullivan and Moon last night arrested two men, Cyril Southwood (33) and James Fitzgerald (29). Both appeared at the Police Court this morning, when they were each charged with breaking and entering the pawnshop of David Bookman and stealing 17 diamond rings and watches, of a total value of £90. Southwood was further charged with stealing a watch and ring, valued at £10, the property of some person or persons unknown. He pleaded guilty on this charge, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Fitzgerald was, in addition, charged with being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful means of support. He pleaded guilty. Senior Detective Hammond, who stated that both men were seamen, asked that they be remanded until July 5 on the major charge, so that further inquiries might be made. The remand was granted. The minor charges, to which accused pleaded guilty, were adjourned until the hearing of the more serious charge.
