THE FLOUR MILLS.
WOOD BROS. TO CLOSE. NOT A CONCERTED PLAX. Latest developments in regard to the flour milling crisis follow the lines indicated by the reports published in these columns during the last few days. Wood Broe., Ltd., of Christchurch, one of the best-known milling firms in the South Island will shut down early next month, according to a statement made yesterday by Mr. Henry Wood. Asked the reason, Mr. Wood said that it was because New Zealand wheat could not be obtained at a price at which it would be profitable to mill it. The f.o.b. prices that millers were offering, he said, were 6/8, 6/10, and 7/ per bushel, according to the description of wheat. They could not buy under 7/ at country stations, which was too much.
Mr. Wood denied that the firm's action was part of any concerted plan to be followed by the flour millers generally. "This has nothing to do with any other millers," said Mr. Wood. "This is simply our own decision. There is no agreement among millers. It is not concerted action by which the millers have decided either to offer the prices mentioned or to close the mills. They decided to offer what thsy consider is a payable price, but they cannot get supplies, and that is the long and short of it."
