On Wednesday Inst the South Auckland League ic.ini gripped down to Wellington and made siiucihing m a. name I'm; themselves by defeating tlie Wellingtoilians by I<> to 12. Both these scores, nnd then some, could have been given mi to the Waikato men on Saturday, and then they would have lm n complete!v lieaten by tlie Auckland representatives. It was the lirst of the scries of trial matches which are to be played in Auckland. and as these games are expected to play an important part in the linal selection of the team to ,so to England. Saturday's game was distinctly disappointing. At full strength the Waikato men could not hope to more than make a fair showing against the Auckland team, but with a weak side it was hopeless for them to even put up a moderate stand. A crowd estimated at 8000 or more patronised Carlaw Park, aud in the first half of the match were treated to the most one-sided game seen in Auckland fur a long time. The visitors were hopelessly outclassed, and with the score, at interval 33 to 3 in favour of Auckland it was not surprising that there should be an alteration made. When the teams filed on to the field for the second spell it was noticed that' several changes had taken place, and included in the South Auckland tram were the local reps.. Gregory. Mansill, Littlcwood, Herring, Payne and Kirwan. Littlcwood bad been in the 'team in tlie first half. The strengthening tip of the visitors saw a great chancre, and though Auckland continued to have a shade (lie best of the game, it was not very much, and the oxhibit&m was value for money. It was an awfully one-sided 'game, the Blues throwing the ball about witli an almost reckless abandon, which iliad the visitors in a complete tangle. (Jieson nnd Davies made a good run for [ South Auckland, but it availed them ' nothing, and the locals were soon ; slumming on the points. Brown I and Delgrosso each .scored inside j a. minute. Saturday next will see the staging of the second of the trials to be played at Carlaw Park. This is the long-looked for game between the North and South Islands, and it will be noticed from the toim selected to represent the North, that the only player outside Auckland to be chosen is Desmond, of Wellington. who will take t>he field at centre threequarter. This means that B. Davidson will play on the wing and with his pace he should be quite at home there. The team is as follow: — Fullback. C. Dufty. Threequarters: T. Littlewood. Desmnnd (Wellington). TS. Davidson. Five-eisrlith*: M. We-theiill. 11. Cole. Halfback: T. Peckham. Forwards: F. Herring, F. Townsend. A. Singe. L. Hutt. J. Clarke. IT. Avery. An endeavour is being made to ar.ange a curtain raiser to the big match between teams chosen from senior players, and the players taking part will have every opportunity to get in the final selection of the men to go to Vr,n-1n,,,l
