THE LUCKY WINNER.

■■—■ "'t MOTOR CAR FOR BUS DRIVER. HIS "810 SURPRISE" PACKET. There was an air jf suppressed excitement about the surprise packet room of Messrs. John Burns and Company's premises in Customs Street this morning when, after preliminary announcements, a director of the firm opened, before the special prize ticket holders and a large gathering of others interested, the envelope containing the lucky numbers. The chief prize was a motor car, valued at £400, and there were twenty or more people who had a chance of winning it. The director read out the first number. It was 3967. and a man cried "It's mc!" He was Mr. P. N. White, a busdriver employed by the Royal Motor Bus Company, Onehunga, who lives on the Long Drive, St. Heller's Bay. A cheer was given when he held out his ticket for inspection, and there was a further demonstration, encouraged by a number of employees looking down from a first-storey window of a building opposite, when Mr. White drove away in the car, which was standing on the parking area in Commerce Street. The lucky winner bought his ticket yesterday morning in Newmarket.

The second special prize of a gramophone was won by Mr, L. Richards, of Messrs. Friar, Richards and Upton; the third, a vacuum cleaner, by Mrs. Gilcrist, of Ellerslie; and the fourth, a travelling rug. by L. M. Lane, of Wbakatane. The results are all advertised in this issue ot the ''Star." Tlie surprise packet day was organised by Messrs. John Burns and Company in aid of the Y.W.C.A. hostel fund. It is pointed out that the method of awarding special prizes was carried out by the manager and assistant manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd. No member of the firm"s staff had anything to do with it, and the envelope from the bank was handed, sealed, to the director this morning. In addition, no member of the Burns staff was a special prize holder.
