SPAIN'S NATIONAL SPORTS.

» BULLFIGHTS AND PELOTA. Dr. L. J. Pellew, who returned to.Adelaide last week, after a world tour, said it was in Spain that he came across his most interesting experience. He spoke of bullfights and the crowds who patronised this barbarous sport. "One afternoon I saw six bulls killed," he said. ""It was a horrible sight in the extreme. The killing of the horses by the bulls was another shocking spectacle. I do not think bullfighting as a sport will decline. It seems to be extraordinarily popular." The other national sport was pelbta, which Dr. Pellew described as a cross between tennis and fives. The ball was hit against a wall and v. struck alternately by men of either side. The fastest game in the world was how he described it, and extremely clever. It was played with cross bats. It was the national game, and was played every afternoon, The most amusing feature was the betting. About 20 bookmakers raucously called the odds. The prices changed with every two or three strokes, It was, therefore, possible to bet on both sides— and win. " /
