PRESENTATION.

A presentation was made to Mr. A. M. Shugar by the members of the staff of tbe Chief Telegraph Engineer to-day, the occasion being Mr. Shugar's retirement to take up a newspaper appointment. The presentation took the form of a set of Pyrex dishes and a fountain peii. The ceremony was performed by the senior supervisor, Mr. G. Severn, who referred to the fact that this was quite a unique event in the history of the Department in that this was the first occasion that a temporary member of the staff, with only a year's service, had been honoured in this way. During the twelve months he had been in the service, Mr. Shugar had proved himself a very capable man, and, above all, his relationship with the other members of the staff had been of tbe very happiest nature. Replying, Mr. Shugar said that the time he had spent in the telegraph service had shown him the difficulties under which the members worked, and expressed the opinion that he had not at any time in his career come in contact with a more hard-working band of men and women, nor had he known a body of employees who were mere zealous in their efforts to "give satisfaction to the public. He felt lie was separating from iriends who would watch his future with interest. He reciprocated their good wishes, and if ever, the time came when he could be of any service to them in his professional capacity, they had but to command.
