AMBASSADORS HOTEL LICENSE
NEW LICENSING LEGISLATION
RESOLUTION BY PRESBYTERY.
The granting of a license to the Ambassadors Hotel in Quay Street was referred to at last night's meeting of the Auckland Presbytery, and on the motion of Mr. Hunt the following , resolution was adopted: "That the Auckland Presbytery desires to enter its emphatic protest against the decision of the majority of the Licensing Committee in granting a license to the Ambassadors Hotel. It views the attitude of the majority of the committee as a betrayal of the trust reposed in them. The Presbytery views with alarm and dismay thp granting of increased drinking facilities in that portion of the city. It notes with deep gratification the attitude of the two daily Auckland papers in their outspoken protests." The Rev. George Budd said he was sure they all appreciated the very outspoken manner in which the two great daily papers of Auckland had dealt with the question. Mr. Hunt al?o submitted a report on temperance work. He " said the New Zealand Alliance had the position well in hand. It was well known that a licensing bill was on the stocks for this session. A deputation from the Alliance had waited upon the Prime Minister upon the question.
Mr. Hunt said it had been decided that this time the Alliance would not hold any conference with the liquor people over the proposed regulations, fApplause). The Alliance was attemptins to secure for next licensing election a two issue ballot paper. The Alliance alfo aimed at stiffening up the licensing law?. That had been made quite clear to the Government. If the two issue ballot paper was turned down, there might be a chance of getting preferout ial voting on the three issue ballot pa per.
