MOUNTAINS STILL GROWING.

I FREQUENT EARTHQUAKES. The mountains of California are still growing, according to Dr. Bailpy Willis, president of the American Seismologie Society. He says that an inward push against the State of California, coming from a layer of rock forming the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, is pushing up the mountains of California. "The whole Pacific Coast region—in South America, Alaska. Kamchatka, Japan and the Aleutian Islands —is very much alive," Dr. Willis said. "The mountains are still growing in all these places. "On the contrary, the mountains in the eastern half of the continent are all very quiet. They have stopped growing.' . The frequency of earthquakes in the west part of the country is explained, on this basis, Dr. Willis said. "It is a well known fact that regions where mountains are still growing are likely to suffer seismic disturbances." he said." "Where the mountains have stopped growing there is little likelihood of such disturbances."
