FLOWING FLAME.
BITUMEN ON FIRE.
BLAZE IN THE STREET,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.*
WHANGAREI, this day.
The boiling over of the Whangarei Borough Council's portable bitumenheater caused a spectacular fire on the Bank Street rise this morning. Near the top of the hill the bitumen caught fire, flowing down the gutter for about a chain, and then down a drain, where it passed under the road, emerging at the outlet of a flood water shoot, still aflame.
The damage wa3 confined to the charring of the wooden kerbing and the shoot. Dense volumes of smoke arose. The fire brigade extinguished the outbreak with its chemical apparatus.
