The Council of Education met to-day,! when the Hon. It. A. Wright, Minister of ( Education, sar.i Oiat, in spite of opinions i recently expressed, it was impossible to divorce" education from economics. The cost of education had risen from 12/ per head in the 'eighties to £."i per head now. It was no use complaining, but people were beginning to ask. whether the j system would "stand the strain of the j growing demands upon it. \ Mr. Wright pointed out that while, tiie average skilled or unskilled work-! man had little left after paying for i rent and bare necessities, the question of earning a living pressed upon children as soon as thov reached the Sixth Stand-, ard. This was another indication of the: close relation of economic with education. Mr. Ciiu-'il.'.r. Hitherto, each director! had been allowed to work out a polity of his own. but wiiat was wanted now were Technical High School Boards and a settled policy.
