BETTING IN AUCKLAND.

THE TOTALISATOR RETURNS.

AN INCREASE IN SPECULATION.

FIGURES FOR THREE SEASONS.

It has often been said that the totalisator is the financial barometer so far as the wealth of the community is concerned. When the figures show an increase money is more or less plentiful, while when the returns decrease as comI pared with the previous year the money j market is tight. The racing season in Auckland has almost concluded; in fact if no extra permits are granted between this and August 1 for the province, there is only one meeting to go, and that is the winter meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club. Previously this was an autumn fixture, but as there was a big gap between this and the spring the club decided to make the meeting a winter one this season, and, if it° i? successful, there is not much doubt that it will remain so. A table is published below giving the totalisator figures for the Auckland province for the last three seasons, and even with the trotting meeting still to be decided the returns for this season show an increase of £8359*, compared with last season, while for the season 1023-24 the increase is £83,590";. It must be recollected that the Thames meeting was held at Takapuna, and in consequence they put through about four times as much money as they did at Thames last season. Trotting has shown an advance of £16,584, and by the time the season closes with another meeting at Alexandra Park the amount handled will be greatly in excess of the previous season, hut this is accounted for by the fact that both the Cambridge and Waikato Clubs held their meetings at Alexandra Park.
