THE DRUG HABIT.

REPLY TO CRITICISM.

STATEMENT BY COLONEL KNOTT.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. K. Mcllveney, stated to-day, regarding Colonel Knott's drug allegations, that he had nothing to say in the matter. Colonel Knott, who is now in Wellington, said he wished to make it clear that the Salvation Army were not acting as detectives, and did not search out the drug victims. Evidence of the evil had come to its notice, but the army was not taking any part in any official action in connection with police investigation.

He remarked: "New Zealand does not know how New Zealand lives." The army, he added, was looking into the matter of drugs, and until a report was available he did not wish to say anything further.
