TAKAPUNA'S DUMP.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Having worked for some years now in the best interests of children, being hon. sec. to the Takapuna public school, naturally, anything I notice that is not in the best interests of the children I try to remedy. Quite recently I noticed that our representatives on the council intended polluting the neighbourhood of Western Takapuna with a nightsoil dump, going so far as to put the lump within a few yards of the Catholic children's playground. Could anything be so monstrous, and the I Health Officer, Dr. Chesson, passed the site as quite suitable. Not so in the minds of every sane thinking person who has the children's welfare at heart. Of course, the Orphanage authorities com- ' plained to the council, likewise myself, on behalf of our public school children, with the result that the dump was to be used. Once again we made a further appeal, almost begging onr Mayor and councillors not to go so far. I received a letter to-day from our representatives (our Mayor and councillors) stating, if I can find a site suitable and to the satisfaction of the council our engineer and our Health authority, the Mayor and council will consider it. Can anyone explain through the Press what the Mayor I and councillors are for; are they to represent the ratepayers or vice versa? To th ; nk that clean living folk have to almost go on their hands and knees to prevent such an outrage on one's home, and in trying to protect a large percentage of the ratepayers' children, one is subjected to insult by the council, by being asked to find a site or have the dump at your door. What is Takapuna coming to?—I am, etc., A. BLOMTIELD.
