AMBASSADORS HOTEL.
PROTEST AGAINST LICEHgm
"FLAGRANT BREACH OF TRUST".
"It seems to mc that we should view with indignation the outrage which ha, been perpetrated upon Auckland by a majority of the Licensing Committee" said Dr. H. Ranston, president of the Council of Christian Congregations, last evening, when the granting of a license to che Ambassadors Hotel was referred to at the quarterly meeting of the council.' Dr. Ranston was glad to see that both daily papers in Auckland had taken the matter up in their leading columns. The editorials published were the most scathing ever penned in New Zealand journalism. He agreed entirely with the attitude oi the newspapers. Had he been a member of the committee, he would'have gone into a corner to hide his head oa reading what had been published.
"There is only one thing to do—we must put in-a new committee at the next election." said Dr. Ranston. He commended the attitude of the chairman, Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M., and added that everyone who voted in defiance -of a pledge which it was fair to assume had been given, should, under the weight of hostile opinion, be obliterated from' public life.
The counci\ carried a resolution voicing its emphatic protest against the granting of the license to the Ambassadors Hotel on tho waterfront. The action of the council was a flagrant violation of the trust reposed in them by the community, which returned them to office in the faith that they would maintain their previous attitude on this question.
