CEREMONY AT TE HIHI,
(Prom Our Own Correspondent)
PUKEKOHE, Monday.
A new school erected at Te Hihi Karaka, on the Waiuku-Papakura Road, was officially opened by the member for Franklin. Mr. Ewen D' McLennan. Among those present was Mr. J. Patterson, a member of the Auckland Education Board. In declaring the school open, Mr. McLennan paid a 'tribute to the generosity of Messrs. A. Yates and Co , who had given the land and the building gratis for the first school about 14 year 3 ago, while he also eulogised the work of Mr. Patterson in stressing the needs of the district educationally v Mr. McLennan congratulated the district on its rapid development, and said he anticipated greater progress in future because the dietrict had been provided with foading facilities. Being a farmer himself, he was naturally interested in the development of land, and he could not help admiring the settlers of Te Hihi for the way they had brought large tracts of more or less virgin land under cultivation. He expressed the opinion that there I was a great future before the Karaka, because at. the present time the suburban area as • far as Papakura was becoming very closely settled, and hitherto farming land along the railway was quickly being converted into residential sites. The school is in accordance with the standard type being erected by the Education Department throughout Xew Zealand, and accomodation is provided for 35 pupils. To-day the roll number is 41. The new building is replete with modern conveniences, the lighting and ventilation arrangements being prominent features.
