ISLAND FRUIT.
COOK ISLAND TRADE,
SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS
WELLINGTON, Monday
A deputation representing the Auckland and Wellington fruit exporters waited on the Minister in charge of the Cook Islands, Sir Maui Pomare, to-day, and placed before him the following recommendations for the organisation of the Cook Island fruit trade:— That the minimum diameter of oranges be 2fin and the maximum diameter 3jin. That they be packed in sizes, after being carefully picked and handled. No windfalls should be tested for sweetness, as is the case in California. The present methods of packing bananas caused from 10 to 20 per cent loss in the best fruit. It was suggested that they be packed on the flat, as in Fiji. The minimum length should be sin, and dishonest packing penalised. It was further recommended that two packing sheds be established at Rarotonga and one at each of the other islands.
The Minister promised sympathetic consideration of the matter.
