ENGLISH SCHOOLBOYS.

SIXTY-SIX NEW ARRIVALS,

CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHEME

The Empire settlement scheme introduced by the Church of England Council, has been commenced, and the first party of English public school boys to be sent to New Zealand arrived in Auckland yesterday morning from Wellington. Members of the executive committee in Auckland, the headquarters for New Zealand, hold out high hopes for the success of the movement, which is as yet in its infancy. The committee consists of the Primate, Archbishop Averill, chairman, Canon C. H. Grant Cowen, the Revs. G. C. Cruickshank, C. A. B. Watson, and R. Hobday, Major S. Harrowell, and Messrs T. Grainger, W. Batty, W. M. Rayner, J. T. Williams, F. Leonard, and A. D. Stanley, secretary.

The new arrivals range in age from 14 to 18 years, and all have been carefully selected for farm work. Positions have been found or the boys in various parts of the Auckland province, from Opotiki in the south, to Matakohe in the north. The boys were selected from all parts of England and Wales.

The scheme provides that a farmer undertakes to find employment for a boy for a period of two years, and to pay him according to his ability. Sub-com-mittees have been set up in Hawke's Bay and Wellington, and these will inquire regularly into the progress of the boys. A grant has been agreed to by the Imperial Government to assist the council in its work. The party was in charge of Mr. J. Foster on the voyage out, and he will be ordained in the Dominion. The boys will be sent to New Zealand at regular intervals, and a further 25 are expected to arrive at Auckland in August or September.
