LEVY OF HALFPENNY.

WATER SUPPLY TO NORTH SHORE. DEVONPORT HAS LION'S SHARE. The annual meeting of the North Shore Boroughs Water Board was held to-day. Mr. T. Lamont was re-elected chairman, and it was decided to make a levy of _d for 1000 gallons on last year's consumption of water. Regarding the levy, the annual report stated that the board had been authorised to levy Id for 1000 gallons, on water pumped from the lake. The quantity pumped, for the year ended on March 31, was 345,382,000 gallons. A levy of Id would produce £1439 1/10. In view of the proposed commission c on the question of water supply in Auckland generally, it was difficult to estimate for the current year, pending the determination of the board's future policy. ' A .suggestion that the board make a ■ levy of id, however, was' adopted, and estimates were submitted showing that ' a revenue of £976 6/7 was anticipated, including an outstanding levy of £138 : 13/2 at Birkenhead, and cash in hand of : £118 2/6. A schedule setting out the quantity of water pumped indicated that the i incidence of the levy would be as ' follows:— ] Gallons. $d Levy. • £. s. _. , Devonport -.-. _90,354,000 604 19 4 Northcote 24,418,000 50 17 5 ' Birkenhead 30,550,000 C 3 14 2 1 Totals 345.352.000 719 10 11 \ For two months, it was reported, no bacteriological examination had been made on the water in the lake, because of the exorbitant fees charged by the [ Hospital Board since the laboratory had been handed over to it. Several members spoke of the good quality of the water, but it was suggested ' by Mr. J. D. Morison that a tour of inspection 6hould be made around the shores of the lake to discover whether any sources of pollution existed. The matter was deferred until the consideration of by-laws, after the Commission's sitting. A meeting of the board would be held as soon an the date of the sitting was announced, and it was agreed that some definite policy should be decided upon to place before the commissioners. The influence of the germs which produce sore throats, hoarseness, running at the nose, watery eyes, coughs, is checked and counteracted by the free use of Nazol.— (Ad.) Ten per cent rebate on boots at Fowlds, Ltd., this week. Only leading English brands included in thus offer.— (Ad.)
