WINTER RACING.

A.R.C. MEETING. DICK WINS STEEPLECHASE. ; The weather was ideal for the continuation of the Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern meeting on Saturday. j The racing was good throughout, despite the fact that the course was heavy j after recent rain. There was a large attendance and the totalisator showed an increase of £855 as compared with the corresponding day last year, the amount handled Saturday being £89,799, against £88,944. This made a total, so far, for the meeting of £170,258, an increase of £2398 10/ on the first two days of the previous winter fixture, which must be considered very satisfactory in view of the bad weather that prevailed on the opening day. There were a few falls in the jumping events, and Erie and Mahgoloire (the favourite for the Great Northern Steeplechase) fell in that event. The rider of Erie, A. H. Burt, had his collarbone broken. In the Panmure Hurdles, Brushwood Boy, the full brother to Erie, which has shown great promise over the battens, fell and broke his back, while Henderson, who had previously ridden two winners during the day, had his collarbone broken. A Close Finish. Monday, Cvi Bono and Mangahewa were scratched for the Hunt Club Cup. Hypothesis was a warm favourite carrying nearly twice as much as Stonewall, while Pendavies was next fancied. The favourite was last when the field settled down and did not seem to handle his weight too well. Going past the stands Stonewall and Ngahinepouri were the leaders from Pendavies, Advent, Hypothesis, Dimlight, Tres Bon and Faber. Hypothesis did not appear to have much chance along the back, for Stonewall, Ngahinepouri, Advent, Pendavies and Dimlight were ahead of him. Ngahinepouri took charge on the top of the hill, and coming into the straight was attended by Advent, Stonewall, Pendavies and Hypothesis. In a good finish between Ngahinepouri and Advent, the former won by half a length. Hypothesis was seven lengths away third, followed by Stonewall, Dimlight, Pendavies and Tres Bon. The winner, which belongs to Te Awamutu, is a half brother to White Comet, and jumped well throughout. Lomint Comes Home. All paraded for the Ranfurly Handicap, and Rowley was the public fancy, being entrusted with about £500 more than Lomint, while Highflown was next in demand in a good betting race. Constellation and Killute carried on most of the running, while Piton, Odd Sox, Pouri, Lomint and Highttown were their nearest attendants as they crossed the top, Thursby being well back. Killute, Constellation, Piton, Odd Sox and Lomint was the order at the home turn. Lomint drew to the front at this distance and won nicely by two and a half lengths from Thursby, which beat Gay Comet by half a length. Quinvardia, Rowley, Norma Talmadge, Constellation, Odd Sox, Highflown and Piton finished as named. The Hurdles. Archibald was made about £180 better favourite than Cureaform for the Remuera Hurdle Race, for which King's Guard was the only defection. Crown Coin and Black Cruiser were also well supported. Prinze Rufus was rushed into the lead, while Archibald and Karamu were next, the three comirg across the * top together, while Cureaform tailed off i and fell at the hurdle at the top of the 1 straight. Black Cruiser (or the outside), Karamu, Prince Rufus and Archi- , bald (on the inside) were pretty well in line as they passed the judge's box the first time, while Lucullent and Crown ! Coin were close up. Along the back . Black Cruiser and Archibald were to- ; gether in charge, with Lucullent next, ( Crown Coin falling at the hurdle by the , six furlong post. Black Cruiser and l Archibald were on terms at the last hurdle, while Lucullent and Prince Rufus i were well back. In the run home Black Cruiser drew out to win easily by four . lengths from Archibald, which beat Lucullent by five lengths. Karamu was next, with Prince Rufus last. The Big Steeplechase. j Landbird, Sea De'il, Prince Rufus, - Lucullent, Crown Coin and Black Cruiser '; were scratched, for the Great Northern Steeplechase. Mahgoloire, which won a double at the Auckland Racing Club's Easter meeting, was the chief fancy carrying just about £80 more than Kawim. There was also good support for Erie, Llewellyn and Tuki. The race was a very fine one, the jumping bein<--excellent throughout, Erie and Mahf goloire being the only ones to fall. Ken- _ dal and Peter Maxwell were the early 1 leaders, but by the time the stands were 3 reached Peter Amans was in front, with ' Peter Maxwell, Erie, Kendal, Kawini . Royal Abbey and Mahgoloire next, while * Dick was second to last, Glenotus being the.only one behind him. Erie failed to a negotiate the brush fence near the mile r post. Kendal then ran to the front * again and led up the hill from Peter f Amans, Kawini, Peter Maxwell, Royal Abbey, Tuki Mahgoloire, Pittsworth l and Dick. Dick had improved his posit tion considerably before the double was - reached. Peter Amans was then in | front, with Kendal, Kawini, Royal e /'* l ?, l - k ' Peter and Pitts--5 following as named. Peter Amans held his position along the back where Llewellyn, Kawini, Kendal, Tuki, Royal Abbey Dick and Peter Maxwell were most handy, Mahgoloire falling at the _ fence by the six furlong post. Lleyellyn - and Kawini were the pilots up the hill but coming down Dick and Kawini drew out being followed by Pittsworth, Tuki Llewellyn and Kendal. In a. great finish Dick beat Kawini by a neck, with Pittsworth three-quarters of a length away third. Tuki, Llewellyn i a «■'- ,T al Abbe - r * Eeter Amans i- and Birkenella were next. A. H. Burt, the rider of Erie, had his collarbone broken, and was sent to hospital. The King George Handicap. After his win on the opening day Nadarino was about £80 better backed than Zaragoza, with Merry Damon next best supported. King Lv, Chairman and King Merv were the pilots for the d greater portion of the way. Entering 1-jthe straight Merry Damon, which had j been coming through, just sho. up on the j*" outside of the- leaders, while Zaragoza, a Barometer and Master Doon were handy. i Merry Damon then ran to the front, andi stalling off Zaragoza and later Barog meter, beat Barometer by three-quarters J* of a length, with Zaragoza a head away ~_ third. Namutere, York Abbey, Master Doon, Titaness, Danae and Siaosi were t, next. Nadarino was prominent in the g* early stages, but then faded out, finishi ing well back.

The Favourite Killed. Brushwood Boy was made over £700 I better favourite than Alaris for the Panmure Hurdles, with Zircon next in demand. Brushwood Boy failed to negotiate the second hurdle, and broke his back, and had to be destroyed. Tinohoro led past the stands from Criss Abbey, Bright Light, Wedding March, Royal Fame and Alaric. Tinohoro was attended by Wedding March, Bright Light, Criss Abbey and Aiaric as they raced along the back, but Wedding March then took charge, and entering the straight, Tinopono, Bright Light and Zircon were most handy. Once over the last hurdle Zircon stayed on the best and beat Wedding March by a head, with Flowing Bowl two lengths away third. Glenidle, Tinopono, Rangitahi, West Abbey and Tinohoro were next. S. Henderson, the rider of Brushwood Boy, had his collarbone broken. He hat! ridden the winner of two races during the day. The Concluding Event. The programme concluded with the Carbine Plate, for which all the acceptors went to the post. Cat Call carried aboul £500 more than Quincoma, while Pegaway was next best fancied. The favourite ran very disappointingly, finishing last. Hokioi led for most of the way. Along the back he* was attended by Maveelish, Catcall, Quincoma, Pegaway and Piton. Entering the straight the field bunched up, Hokioi, Maveelish, Quincoma and Pegaway being the most prominent. Quincoma then drew out to win in easy fashion by two lengths and a-half from. Pegaway, which beat Hikioi by six lengths. Maveelish, Piton and Cat Call finished in that order.
