Newton and Manukau tried conclusions at the Showgrounds, Manukau kicking off with the sun in their faces. Before the game had been long in progress iKinukau infringed and from the penalty Pickering placed a goal. Three points to the i-ad, the blacks put more dash Into their work, a try near tbe posts by McClusky rewarding their efforts. Paseoe missed an easy kick. For the remainder of the spell, the Newton forwards, with Callaghan prominent, had slightly the better of the game. There was nothing of an exciting nature in the second rally until Manukau took play into "their opponents' territory for Amohanga to pick up and start a bout of passing, ending with a try by Brimtole. Again the kick failed. A penalty against the blacks allowed Newton to take the offensive, bnt their backs' found the sun difficult and the movement broke down. Near the end of the spell Hanlon put in a fine dash but was well grassed. A good breakaway by Callaghan early In the second half gained a lot of ground for Newton, but a tricky run and long punt by McClusky nullified the effort Both sides failed to show any great degree of accuracy in their handling, the* play at times being ragged. By' using the short punt, the- blacks penetrated Newton's defence and a score looked likely when the reds' full-back failed to field cleanly. A scrum was put down, however, and Newton cleared. Amohanga and Davis indulged in a bout of passing which almost, brought'a score.

Following a spell of even going between the rival packs Manukau infringed and Pickering had an unsuccessful shot. When Newton again attacked. Manukau weathered the storm and worked their way down field until good work by Hanlon sent them back. Just on the call of time Manukau were again penalised and on this occasion Pickering made no mistake with the kick, the game ending with the scores equal.
