MR. WILLIAM SOUTER.
(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") DUNEDIN, this day. Mr. William Souter, who died at Waikouaiti at the age of irinety-one years, was born in Forfarshire and was brought up to country life, particularly amongst the cattle. He came out to Port Chalmers by the ship Silistria in 1860. When twenty-five years old he went inland and served as a shepherd on an Omarama station. After two years of that work he took up the "Grange" property of 600 acres at Flag Swamp. This he, by hard work and all round knowledge, converted into one of the most fertile areas ip the district. He bestowed his chief attention on the raising of cattle for butchering. About fifteen years ago he sold Flag Swamp property to the late Mr. W. Patrick, and went to live at Waikouaiti. He was an authority in particular on Shorthorn breeding, and at the summer show for many- years he judged or acted as steward in that class for the Otago A. and P. Association, of which body he was a very ardent supporter, becoming, in turn, a life member and then a life governor.
