TOURIST LEAGUE.

ADVERTISING OF ATTRACTIONS COMMERCIAL METHODS SUGGESTED. At a meeting of the Xew Zealand Tourist League, held yesterday, at which Mr. J. W. Broadfoot", of Te Kuiti. presided, considerable attention wag given to the question of securing combined Government and private interest action in the setting up of a sales force to market New Zealand's tourist attractions on regular commercial mothods. It was stated by the secretary that the Prime Minister had promised to receive a deputation from the league on his next visit to Auckland. The increase in the fares on intercolonial steamers was discussed, ami the general opinion was that it would react adversely en tourist traffic to New Zealand, and that as the steamer companies had virtually a monopoly of the trade, with no losses due to competition, it was reasonable to expect a decrease in fare.s rather than an increase. The mattsr is to be taken up with the steamship companies. Further effort is to be made to secure the alteration of the title of the C. & A. line of boats to include the words, "New Zealand," or an abbreviation of them, in the title. It is contended that as New Zealand is the only country thnt pays a subsidy to the cempany. it is but fair that the country should have the benefit of what publicity can be obtained from the fact. The secretary was instructed to make inquiries as to the possibility of motor traffic usine the new road from the Waimana Valley to Lake Waikaremoana when the Public Works Department has finished it. This road would lessen the distance from Auckland to the lake by 100 miles. Saliefaction was expressed that work had been commenced on the direct route from Te Kuiti to Taumarunui. as this will afford an all-the-year-round route to the National Park, which area will very likely become the pivotal point for tourists. A memorandum on the question of accommodation for traveller* has boon prepared by the league, and is to be circulated among the various interest* concerned so as to elicit opinions to form the basis of a joint memorandum to tlie Government Tourist Department and privat? investors. The possibility of a workable road bring found to connect Westland with Otajro is to be taken rip with the South Tsland Progrre'sive League. It was reported that this summer an enterprising agent is to conduct parties over the present track, on which horses will be used.
