%n air of general prosperity contlnneilte prevail in and around Pukekohe. The recent rains have had a decidedly beneficial effect from a farming point of view, and the outlook for the near future may be regarded as most encouraging. _,„♦_,,.♦ The general development of the district during the past year is evidenced by the fact that nearly 50 building permits were issued, by the Borough Council; these, together with numerous improvements and, alterations undertaken, involved a total expenditure considerably in excess of £22,000. MANTJREWA. Succes-sful efforts have been made to obtain a permanent supply of water In the lo.al school grounds. Boring operation* tapped a pood supply at a depth of sixty feet, but the flow was not deemed sufficient to provide for swimming baths in the future. By sinking to 130 ft a splendid flow of over fiOO gallons per hour ■—*b obtained, and this will meet all requirements. The School Committee Intends to call for voluntary laboui for excavating and other work, and as the br.ths will be a great asset to the distritr, the reque.t should meet with a ready response. The Gymnastic Club held- a successful dance in The Theatre on Tuesday even.ng. There was a large attendance of youns peopl*, and excellent music was provided. The entertainment resulted in an appreciable addition to the club's fund 6, and would be especially welcome in view of the lack of necessary equipment for ttie organisation of an up-to-date gymnasium. The membership of the club is increasing steadily, and everything augurs well for its future. The usual bi-weekly meeting of the Town Board was postponed till Monday next owing to the lack of a quorum. WHAKATANE. The Whakatane Fire Brigade's annual ball held in the Grand Theatre on Tuesday evening was a very successful function. There was a large attendance of dancers, including a number of members of the Opotiki Fire Brigade. Superintendent Anderson, of Rotorua, and Captain Watts, of Newmarket, president and secretary respectively of the United Fire Brigades' Association, were also present. Morrish. wrote to the Chamber of Commerce advising that he had been instructed hy the district telegraph inspector at Auckland to inform the chamber that Its communication concerning the installation of an automatic telephone circuit at Whangarei had been referred to the head office at Wellington for decision In connection with the proposed carnival, week at Whangarei the Chamber of JCommerce decided to call a public mvmng, from which committees will be constituted.
