AUSTRALIA V. HAMPSHIRE.

COLLINS WINS TOSS AGAIN. 187 FOR FIVE -WICKETS. LIVELY KNOCK BY TAYLOR. (By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright.! (Iteccived 1i.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 12. The weather was fine, but the wicket slightly damp for the start of the Australian match against Hampshire. Collins won the toss and batted. The Australians opened quietly. The bowlers required watching, but were not troublesome. Collins gave two chances at the wicket in the early stages off Newman. Bardsley played a characteristic innings, showing sound defence and punishing loose bails, but he was somewhat unhappy when facing, the slow left-hander, Boyes. When the total reached 50 rain interfered for a quarter of an hour, and on resumption the batsmen were not assertive. After lunch they found Kennedy difficult, and were uncomfortable. Collins, when 35, survived a strong appeal for leg before, and iv the next over he was nearly stumped. Bardsley all through was uneasy, though good on the lefe' strokes. Macartney survived two appeals, the [ first at the first ball for a catch at the wicket, and the next ball for lbw. Then he returned the third ball lamely to Kennedy. Collins followed him next over. He had played patiently and safely. Taylor and Ponsford were more lively. They drove forcefully and executed beautiful carpet drives. Gross, the reputed googly exponent, and Boyes, both slow bowlers, were punished severely, runs being scored off almost every ball, mainly from drives. Ponsford succumbed through leaving alone an oft" ball which broke eighteen inches. Andrews and Taylor were clashing, tbe latter indulging in some powerful drives. CENTURY BY GREGORY. MADE IN 75 MINUTES. (Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. Woodfull, Richardson, Hendry, Oldtield and Grimmett stood out of the Australian team. The Hampshire team is:—Aird, Brutton, Gross. Hill, Mead, Brown, Kennedy, Newman, Bowell, Livsey, and Boyes. Taylor was confident and spectacular. He drove cleanly and his wrist work was splendid. He fell a victim to the first delivery with the new ball after the second century, after having batted for 85 minutes and hitting six fours.

Gregory opened in a lively manner with three fours off Newman, and continued to score by boundaries, reaching fifty in 38 minutes. Ellis was run out under exciting circumstances. He was sent baqk when attempting a short single. Gross, \" fielding the ball, slipped, then picked up and threw down the wicket. Gregory was brilliant. He drove Boyes in one over for two, four, six and one, and then did the same with Gross for four, six, and three more fours, reaching the century with a six in 75 minutes. Then he followed up with a third sixer off Boyes. The Hampshire fielding was good.— (A. and N.Z.) Scores: — AUSTRALIA.—First Innings.
