PROTECTION SOCIETY.

The committee of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children Hint Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met for their usual monthly meeting on Monday afternoon. There were present: The Ilev. Jasper Calder (president), the Itevs. Smallfield, Bond, Goldstein, Jeffreys, Watson, Mesdamcs Devore, Chambers, Coats, Cr»l<Kshanlc, Laing, Kernot. Simpson. Stratford, Turner, Sister Hannah. Major Gordon. Dr. Montgomery, Dr. l'urchns, Misses Jackson, Trevithick, Messrs. Brook, Ellerbeck, Stratford, Walle. The Bey. P. ?. , SmallfleM was unanimously re-elected "chairman of committee for the ensuing year. Twelve names were nominated from the committee, and were duly elected, to form ft special committee lo act in conjunction with the twelve elected at the annual meet- * ing. Tbls committee of twenty-four will meet to discuss the advisability or otherwise of dividing the .Society as suggested at the' annual meeting. The name of the Hon. Geo. fowlds was added to the General Committee. The inspector (Capt'iin Lee) reported that he had given 10 cautions In cases of horses neglected or ill-used, eat'le. etc. One case was taken to Court and a tine of f2 imposed by the magistrate. Four animals were humanely destroyed. The inspector had visited the suburbs and surrounding country districts, had inspected city markets, wharves, tips; had attended Wostfteld sales, abattoirs, etc. It was resolved to provide the inspector with a light rifle for destroying small animals, this being more suitable than the humane killer in such, cases. The Rev. J. Calder reported that In his capacity as lion, inspector he lately rode fifty miles Into the country to inquire into a reported case of neglect and cruelty toward horses, dogs and other animals by Maoris. :He warned the Maories of the villages concerned, and was satisfied that there would be no repetition of the complaints made. It was resolved to write to the Inspector of Fisheries for Information re fishing with live halt. It was resolved to obtain from "England samples of humane snares Used in trapping rabbits. Mr. A. M. Perry ' was reappointed an honorary inspector. The appointment of Mrs. Una Travis as collector for the society was confirmed. In the women and children department. the secretary reported that IS now cases | had been dealt with, during the month. Of these, nine dealt with troubles between husbands and wives, six concerned children. ! one affiliation case, and two various | matters.
