MAINTENANCE OF STREETS.
SHOULD RATEPAYERS PAY? At last evening's meeting of the Takapuna Council it was decided that representation be made to the Government to consider at its next session the question of the maintenance of roads by money other than that taxed from the ratepayers. Acting on a suggestion from the Hamilton Borough Council it was resolved that the Government be informed, that the Takapuna Council viewed with concern the increasing burden which is being placed on its ratepayers in respect to the formation and maintenance of streets. Further, that the council is of the opinion that such increased charges.are due solely to the demands of, arid the damage caused by, motor traffic, that it is inequitable to burden the ratepayers with the whole of these charges, and that the Government be urged to introduce the necessary legislation transferring an equitable portion of the burden from the ratepayers to the users of the roads and streets.
