MOUNT EDES. The Mount Eden Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor < Mr. E. H. Potter) presiding. Richmond Street.—lt was decided to tar the footpath in Richmond Street for a width of six feet, the balance to be in grass and -shrubs, on condition that the ratepayers keep the grass cut and the shrubs in order. Baildiin? 'Permits. —The building permits issued in che borough daring the month of April numbered 43. of __ estimated value of £12.193. -The permits included six dwellings, and five shops. Repairing Tram Tracks.—The City Council advised that the work on tram lines between Brixton Road and Herbert Road, and from Walters Road to George Street, was to be put in hand. The work Includes the lifting or lowering uf raits and repairing the track. Fire Brigadp.— Recommendations from the Fire Brigade Committee, which were adopted, were for increasing the brigade from 12 to IS men. the providing of helmets, that £2000 be included in the next loan tv pruvide for an up-to-date fire alarm system, and that £rioO be included in the next loan to provide, a second tire motor for the brigade.

Tha city treasurer forwarded a cheque for £ __7 1.1 3 for heavy traffic fees collected for Onehunga by the Auckland f'irr Council, being the apportionment of 30 ppr rent on a population basis icenaus iy.li. and oO ppr cent on a capital rateable value basis for a period of three months ended March 31 iasr. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board informed the council that Onehunga's contribution for charitable aid amounts to £ 135_ 10/4. being an inert*** of £40 ovpr last year. Tenders.—The council accepted the render of Mr. J. Mclntyre to place a tie rod at the reservoir on One Tree Hill for the sum of £10 H,. An offer from the .silico Calcaine Company to take scoria from Mr. .<mart scoria pit at 9d per cubic yard, for a period of tPn years, was referred to the Reserves Committee for a report. Building Permits.—The town clerk. "Mr. FT. A. Yockney. reported that 19 permits for new buildings had been Issued during the fortnight, of a total value of £3311. Allan's Sprinss.—The Health Dppartment is to be asked to analyse a sample of water from Allan* springs, and if the test Is satisfactory steps be taken to ascertain the capacity of the well : also that an estimate of the cost of an electrical pump be obtained. Street Shrubs. —Ratepayers desiring to do tto, are to be allowed to plant evergreen shrubs on the sides of approved roads, a dpscription of the shrubs to be submitted to tbe council for approval. Street Work. —The inrprspctions of Quadrant. Norman's Hill Roads, and of Auckland Road and Trafalgar Street, are to be regraded aud remetallpd ; also the western side of Grey Street from Quadrant Road to Queen Street b- treated in a like manner.

Hospital Inquiry—Mr. J E. Green moved, and it was agreed to request the Minister of Health to appoint a Commission, presided over by a judge of the Supreme Court, to make a public inquiry into the expenditure of the Auckland Hospital Board. Quarry Site.—The Chamber of Commerce asked the council to devise a scheme for filling in the quarry site at the Junction of Queen and Trafalgar Streets. Thpn continue rhe latter street through the section to I'ardwell Street. If that were done rhe council could close Nixon Street, just above the quarry. The council has no funds to deal with the quarry =ire. and the Chamber of Commerce is to be informed accordingly. Bus Signals.—lt was resolved to request the Auckland <"iry Council to compel motor buses plying for hire through onehunga to display a rear signal at night in the same way that the tram cars are going to do. Proposed War Memorial.—Mr. T. R. Gilbert proposed that the council in committee consider a scheme for providing a recreation reserve at the fool of Church Street. In outlining the scheme the mover suggested thac his idea was ro rake in about 12J acres of the beach and to run a retaining wall from the present bathing sheds to the bluff on the other side. He did not quote any figures but he would do so in committee. If the proposal materialises it could be regarded as a war memorial, and called Anzac Park. The resolution was seconded by -Mr. J. E. Green and adopted. XEW ITII-f. A meeting of the Xew Lynn To<vn Board was held last evening. There were prehear; Messrs. C. F. Gardner ichairmani. H. >• Wilding. A. Shaw, E. Stacey, F. Roberts. and I. Hughes. Street Lighting.—A letter was received from the Waitemata County Council i- 1 whi.-h it was agreed to pay half the emit of lighting a boundary road. A communication was also received from the Waitemata Power Board, who Informed the board that they were prepared to supply electric current for the above purpose on June Ist. It was accordingly decided to give the Auckland Gas Compauy the necessary notice ol the change to be effected. The new system will more than double the present lighting facilities.

Titirangl lioad. — A letter was received from the city waterworks deparrment in response to a letter from the joarl in regard to tie condition of the footpath at t_ia road, whi.-h had been subject to excavation by the installing of the city water mains. It was stated that the testing at the 3;i;n main was belnz carried out, hut owinz to leaky joints It had been n«"essary to open up the footpath in several places. Ho*ver,-r. arrangements bad made to put the footparh in a satisfactory condition at once. Stanley Street.—Mr. J. A. Parry reported that the crossing, as agreed upon on rats road, had been constructed to his satisfaction. Hr. Hughes complained that th« crossing had not been satisfactorily made, and he protested accordingly. The c|pr_ stated that hp had handed over the dedication on receipt of the engineer's report as he had been instructed. Valuations. — The Valuation Department a 'knowledged the receipt of the board s objections to tbe assessments placed on a number of properties in connection with the ro-valnation. Drainage. — The Aiiekland Harbonr Bnara wrote regardins the board's proposed sewerage scheme, it was intimated that before any scheme which involves drainage into either the Auckland or Manutau Harbour is adopted, -he plans wonld b<* required to be submitted to the board and Its consent obtained. Kelston Water Supply.—The Waitemata Council wrote stating taat in regartl to tne supply of water to residents in KaraKa Street, it would be some before the County Council would be Ir. a position to supply water. It was suggested that tie board should supply, and option he given the council to fake over the pipes at any time from the board at coat price, the board to coctinne the supply of water until rhe council eser"i=ed the right of purchase.
