TAKAPUNA FINANCES.

SAME RATES AS LAST YEAR. RESIDENTS AGREEABLY ' SURPRISED. It will come as a pleasant surprise to Takapuna ratepayers to learn that there j is to be no increase in rates for the' | current financial year, an increase having been generally anticipated in view of the large amount of loan money expended ; during the past year. At a special meeting of the Borough' Council last evening, the draft proposals were dealt with in detail, the estimates adopted, and a resolution imposing the j rates for the year on the same basis as j those of last year, namely, a consolidated ; rate of 3-12 th of a penny in the f, or! 26/ per £100 of valuation on the pre-1 sent assessment of the ratable value of ; £2,016,896, to which recent improve- i ments of property have yet to be added,' passed. I In providing for expenditure, the. council set down £4000 for street maintenance, £700 for street lighting, £350 for parks, £220 for libraries, and £150 for bathing sheds, and in reviewing the salaries voted several increases, includ- j ing £50 for the town clerk, with a bonus . of £50 for extra services, and i'2s for the assistant town clerk. , Complimentary reference to the work of the town clerk, Mr. H. L. Bowden, was made by the Mayor (Mr. J. D. Morison) and members of the council.
