DANGEROUS CROSSINGS.
ELIMINATION PROBLEM.
LOCAL RESPONSIBILITIES
' SUGGESTIONS FROM TARANAEJ. (By Telegrapn.—Special to "Star.") STRATFORD, this day. The question of the elimination of dangerous railway crossings was discussed at a meeting of No. 7 District Highways Council. The chairman stated that, in response to a request of the Highways Board, he had forwarded a list of dangerous crossings last month, with a recommendation that they be eliminated, but had heard nothing further. Reviewing the position, the chairman said further that it seemed as if the Railway Department were anxious to do their part, but evidently the Government expected the local bodies to contribute something towards the cost. He suggested that all the local bodies in Taranaki get together and make an offer to contribute part of the cost involved in the elimination of dangerous crossings, and, if that were done, he did not think action would be long delayed. Tt was suggested that part of the heavy traffic fees might be used for the purpose of contributing one-third of the cost, the Railway Department and the Highways Board finding the other two-thirds. Mr. E. Walter, M.P., pointed out that there were so many dasgerous crossings in the Dominion that, unless the local bodies were prepared to do their share, the problem of elimination could not be faced. It was decided to refer the matter to the Taranaki local bodies for an expression of opinion, and the matter will come before the Highways Council again at its next meeting.
