THE FLOUR TRADE.
AUSTRALIAN RISE. PLEASES SOUTHERN MILLERS. (1y Telegrapn.—Own Correspondent.! '-'"•''■ DUXEDIN, Friday. • Some days ago reference was made to the anxious outlook in New Zealand of .the flour milling trade owing to Australian millers sending over large quantities of flour and thus cutting deeply , into business between the North Island as. buyer and the South Island as producer. The position now is organically much as it was then, but not -so feverish, j Australian prices for flour have advanced by about _£i. per ton.. This was I •the one and only Telief that New Zealand millers really hoped for. A rise in the market is bound to affect the sending Over of. flour, perhaps by only a little-j immediately, for" there must be some forward bought flour on the way or to, be shipped, but TnKa couple of months j from now, if-the rise is-maintained. New Zealand millers . are sure „to feel the ( benefit, .. i .. ...',.. " i "The price of-'-wheat in Australia 1 has also gone,, up a-bit, and. things are looking more hopeful,"- said one of the Dun- j edin millers... to. ; day. "We thought -a ' week or_ two'ago that we would have to! cut to compete'with Australia, j but now that markets are firmer in | Australia we 'do riot think cutting necessary, and the decision arrived at is. to let the position develop naturally.' Any reduction of our prices would mean! that we would be. carrying on at a loss."
