THE UPPER HARBOUR.
Bee! Kauri>Point, all green and brown. We, swinging to an eight-knot breeze, On the deck, walking carefree, Tanned by the ocean seas. Turn, love, even the hulks look pretty, And St. Matthew's stands above, On the hill, guarding the city, ■ And that white thing on the left Catches the slanting sun, Glistening, glistening, yet undone. Unfinished .in its hideous fretwork. Turn away, look to the west— The trees are taller, / The! shore seems smaller; It was big when we played there. Yes, that is Island Bay, a curve of green
again, Dripping trees, with autumn rain, And the scented air. Hellyer's Creek, Where the seagulls swerveThere, over the curveOf the shore. Look! Hobsonvllle And Pine Island before,' Green, green from shore to shore. God! Will they cut down the trees And leave it desolate and brown, Those men from the town ? See, the little brown bay Where the bubbles are left by the tide, And the cleft in the rock by the cranny S "here we used to hide.' o you - rem ember! that night' - ~ When the stars of Albany Shone in the waters as bright As those in heaven ? And the moon of the Birkdale bus Krom the summit, glaring down at us. Not to many given . The love that we have for the west. Where all is lovely and still. Whenuapai with its meadows, And our house under the hill. Oh, my heart, what is this That pulls mc home? , What is it, this bljss That loves each rock and tree? I am finished with roaming, The city Beems. far away. In the gloaming We i shall tell our hopes again. —THOS. STAGPOOLB.
