TO BAN THE PIPES. .
'■■>; SCOTS DEMAND IT. v'( Scotsmen who object to bagpipes and the ''hooch" hare staggered- whatever humanity Survives in, pipers and-dancers by seeking to have these national noises suppressed as a public nuisance. ~-•*,..'
, Note.—The "hooch" Is a cry uttered by, ,Or wrung from, a dancer .while" idealising »-.the "reel," and Is not, as some authorities have, thought/ the feminine of "haggis." It I Is derived f norn the Scottish whisky rather than, the German "hoch."
The bombshell has fallen in Glasgow, Where-the proprietors of a' hotel and other neighbouring properties are taking legal actios In the hope of stopping the bagpipes andt the "hoocbing" which go on at dances and other entertainments at the Highlanders' Institute. It is complained that the people living around are thereby deprlved~,.of their rest. '•■'.__ *"'
:"t Among those "cited" as.associated with the institute are the Duke. of Athol, the 'jpiatrb.n; Sir Andrew H. Pettigrew, president; the Lord Provost, Principal Sir Donald MacAltster, of Glasgow. University.' and others. A committee-of five has: be*n appointed to negotiate,.and"an attempt may ,p'e niade to settle' the 1 matter amicably.
