GRANDSTAND BURNED.
■ -a—, OX ROTORUA RACECOURSE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, this day. A fire at 3 a.m. this morning totally! destroyed the Rotorua Racing Club's J i second grandstand. The building con-i j tamed a store of baled hay, and it is' assumed that the cause of the fire must j have been spontaneous combustion. j The building was covered by an in-1 suranoo policy in the Atlas office for! £500, but probable the loss is f 1000. This grandstand was erected by the Government and the club* in conjunction on the occasion of the Prince of Wales' visit to Rotorua six years a<*o. Thieves broke into Walter's general store, Blockhouse Bay, last evening, and stole cigarettes, chocolates nnd bathing suits. A cash* register was tampered .with, but contained only accounts. The j
perpetrators gained entrance through a window of the back of the store. This is the second time since Christmas that the place has been burglariously entered. Since the Easter rush, railway passenger traffic ha? been quieter, although it is being well maintained on the Main Trunk expresses. Of late both the ordinary express and the Limited outward-bound from Auckland bave been comfortably filled. The esoolar, a flsh which till lately bad not been observed in Now Zealand waters, is evidently present in some uumbers, in the Bay of Plenty at all events. Further specimens bave been caught in the vicinity of White Island, and some of these have been forwarded to the Auckland Museum. Taken from Symonds Street on Wednesday evening, a motor car, owned by Mr, A. Leash, electrician, was found undamaged at the back of the Wellesley Street post office yesterday morning. i
